Autumn “Hawaii”
Original Artwork $400: www.orlandosanchezart.bigcartel.com
16 inches by 20 inches
Acrylic on illustration board
Hawaii was an enlightening experience for Autumn that she remembers fondly. There she was able to have a connection with nature and become more in tuned with her inner dialogue. This allowed her to become more of a centered person with a great presence. For her Hawaii was very magical and ethereal. With this painting I wanted to capture her essence of serenity and note that the big island of Hawaii was a place where she found this serenity. The way I would describe the painting is that there is serene goddess on the big island of Hawaii creating this magical moment in the darkness of the night.
On the artistic level Autumn has influenced my work to explore mood, space, landscape, and sculpting out the figure. My favorite part of the painting aside from the beautiful mood I see in it, is the way the figure is sculpted with the values. You can imagine the figure as a three dimensional figure with mass and density and imagine the light hitting the form of her arm . Imagine sculpting with putty, that’s how it felt like when I was painting. For me its a new level of appreciating form on a figure.

This painting was so much fun! I got into a meditation mode when I painted the background landscapes. It felt like I reached a new level of enjoyment and when it was done the feeling slowly went away, such an interesting occurrence.
Autumn is the beautiful muse I am focusing on this month for my beauty collection, last month was loli and her drawings. I started painting in acrylic again and thanks to the contrast of working in charcoal I am really enjoying the color combinations. One of my most influential artist is Ashley wood and I really enjoy his treatment of painting, it looks like a lot of fun. Thanks to his influence the background is a result of his loose backgrounds.
Final note I counted about 6 different landscapes in the painting:) How many do you see? What do you think of the color explosion on this painting and the mood?
A great photo shoot with Autumn out in the river at 11pm. The moon was light enought to be able to take some great photos. I started doing a small collection from this photo shoot that I will be showing later on. It is the study of color, mood, and space. What it started making me think about it, was that I want to be the artist who paints his life experiences that resonate with others or inspires them.
Some very inspiring photos I took of Loli at the photo studio I was in:) It was so much fun:) If you’d like to see all the drawings inspired from our shoot you can see them at my online gallery www.orlandosanchezart.bigcartel.com Thank you:)

The title of the painting refers to both the technical execution and the expression on her portrait. I Played with edges that are soft and lost to create a dynamic range of visual description with in the image. I also did my best on her expression that describes a softer side of a person. Looking away and having a memory or a thought conguer up and become engulfed by that thought for a moment. While the viewer is looking at this moment occur. I’ve had this happen in conversations before where the person pauses for a moment to think of a pleasant thought. It’s a quick moment in life but I’m able to capture it on paper and enjoy prolonging that experience. Hope you enjoy it, thank you:)

I had a great time putting together the video for this drawing and watching the changes that went on for 9 hours. Usually your working on a piece and once you commit to a change your memory of what it used to look like before is pretty bad. I think there were a couple points where it was finished but I wanted to continue pushing my self to really get the expression and feeling across very well.
The feeling I had after it was complete was a sense of letting go of your own consciousness. A feeling of transcendence that every one goes through right before going to sleep. That one moment that you feel yourself slipping from one reality into another. Your memory of color shifts into these warm and cools, and at times only black and white. I find a deep connection with this painting that I enjoy. It is beautiful:)
Hope you enjoy the journey of watching the process and the painting. Oh and I want to say thank you to all the new followers, and rebloggers:)
Charcoal, nupastel, and black sumi ink on neenah crest paper. 4 hours of drawing process condensed to 3 minutes 21 seconds.
It’s interesting to see where I would erase and redraw the face and try doing it again until I got it to where I thought it was good.
I also scanned the image in 600dpi to put it on society6. High quality giclee prints are available at: www.society6.com/orlandosanchezart

Work in progress on this large oil painting. The composition is going to take a big change after the oils dry. What I am planning is to create some sort of structure with the background so that you can focus more on the portraits and your vision of the painting isn’t so scattered. A little organization is in order with the composition:)
My plan is the black and white version. Inspired from several different sources. I needed to go back to my value design of the composition.
The painting is oil on Neenah 110lbs paper. I sealed the paper with polyurethane before painting with oils on top. Pretty sturdy and low cost, and great for traveling.

Loli is one of three models that I recently did a photo shoot with that will inspire several studies. These studies will help the influence of what direction the large oil paintings will go. With this study I was intrigued with the idea of starting the drawing with charcoal. Charcoal allowed me to focus on just line and value. Then towards the end of the drawing I layered a warm and cool color to create a dynamic scene with in the black and white drawing. Finally with black sumi ink I was able to make the blacks even darker.
I love meeting and enjoying the story of each new muse that I get the chance to shoot for my ever growing beauty collection:) This is Loli showing me a nonchalant way of dislocating your shoulder. Damn!!! She is a very intelligent and beautiful girl, and we had a long wonderful conversation afterwards about everyone’s beauty. Conclusion of the conversation is cliche “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” cliche but I love it. It’s what i’m all about; I am the sole responsible being for seeing the beauty and to express it on canvas! I enjoy that challenge:)
What are your thoughts about seeing beauty? Do you consider it an easy thing to see or something that you have to work on?
Loli Digital Study #1
Digital painting is really allowing for a very saturated color play. By the way Loli the amazing girl that she is, is dislocating her shoulder in this painting. It’s an interesting thing to take a picture and then make a painting about it.
